Cat6A and Cat6 FAQ's

What is the difference between Cat6 and Cat6A?

  • Category 6 or Cat6 cabling is designed to offer 1 Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbp/s) at 250mhz.
  • Category 6A or Cat6A cabling is designed to offer 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10,000 Mbp/s) at 500mhz.

Do you offer Cat7?

  • HellermannTyton Connectivity does not offer a Cat7 cabling system. The reality for Cat7 cabling is that it offers little to no extra benefit over Cat6A.
  • Cat7 is designed to offer 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10,000 Mbp/s) at 600mhz. This is only 100mhz more than Cat6A.
  • Cat7 cabling is more expensive, there are also no Cat7 RJ45 connectors, unless you are using speciality connectors which are non-RJ45 based such as the terra connector, then you would be installing Cat6A connectivity as standard. This means you will only be able to test up to Cat6A parameters.

What is the shortest patch lead you make?

  • The shortest copper patchcord in Cat6 or Cat6A that HellermannTyton Connectivity produce is 20cm. Our standard lengths are 1m, 2m, 3m, 5m, 7m and 10m. Non-standard lengths are custom made upon request.

What is the difference between types of cable shielding / screening?

  • U/UTP or UTP is an acronym for Unshielded Twisted Pair. This means there is no shielding within the cable construction.
  • F/UTP or FTP is an acronym for Foil Twisted Pair. This means there is a foil shield that surrounds all four pairs.
  • U/FTP is an acronym for Unshielded / Foil Twisted Pair. This means there is no shielding that surrounds all four pairs; however, each pair has its own foil shield.
  • F/FTP is an acronym for Foil / Foil Twisted Pair. This means there is a foil shielding that surrounds all four pairs, as well as each pair having its own foil shield.
  • S/FTP is an acronym for Shielded / Foil Twisted Pair. This is the same construction as F/FTP, however the outer shield that surrounds all four pairs is made using a wire braid as opposed to a foil. Each pair having its own foil shield.

What is HellermannTyton Connectivity's recommended Bend radii of CAT6 and CAT6A cables?

  • The recommended bend radii information can be found on our cabling data sheets.
  • Our Cat6 U/UTP Cca cable - CA196 has an outer diameter of 7.1mm. We recommend a bend radii of 8 x outer diameter during installation - 56.8mm and 4 x outer diameter during operation 28.4mm.
  • Our Cat6A F/FTP Cca cable - CA199 has an outer diameter of 7.5mm. We recommend a bend radii of 8 x outer diameter during installation - 60mm and 4 x outer diameter during operation 30mm.

Do you warrant links over 90 metres?

  • Cabling links over 90mtrs do not meet the cabling standards, so when it comes to testing you will see an automatic fail. HellermannTyton Connectivity understands that in some cases there may be links that go beyond the 90mtr threshold.
  • It is important to note that our warranty guarantees performance of your cabling systems when correctly installed and tested by an authorised installation company. Length of your links will influence its overall performance.
  • Our warranty policy is clear, in that we will treat each installation on a case-by-case basis. If the performance margins are met but the failure is down to length alone then we will not prevent this from processing a warranty application, however, as part of our terms and conditions, if a claim on the warranty was to realise, Hellermanntyton would conduct a site audit to ascertain the issue and cause. If we attribute loss of performance to over length links, then the warranty will be void for that particular case.

What is your accreditation process?

  • HellermannTyton Connectivity only offers its cabling system and warranty through authorised installation companies.
  • To become a HellermannTyton Connectivity Authorised installer you are required to attend our Cat6 / Cat6A day course. Here the installer will brush up on industry standards and general installation practices before gaining a full understanding of our copper product range. We teach the installer best practice for handling and termination of our products to gain the best performance possible. Once completed the installer receives a certificate to show they have attended and completed the course and that we are happy for them to install and warrant our products.
  • For new installation firms that we have not worked with previously we may also insist on completing a 1st and 2nd fix audit of their first HellermannTyton installation.

How do I apply for a warranty?

  • If you have attended and completed one of our authorised installer courses, then you can apply for our system warranty.
  • To do this you must first complete testing of the installation. If there are any links that require attention, please fix and re-test. Ensure results show a pass.
  • Once testing has been completed, please fill in our warranty application form out in full. Email both warranty form and test results to our warranty admin team for processing.
  • Test results must be sent in the native file format, i.e., Linkware. We do not accept summarised PDF files.
  • The admin team will check the results and log the information on the warranty form. If all data submitted meets our standards, then a warranty certificate is issued.
